SHARE NOW

An Auburn man has been sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting a police officer during a 2024 incident.

48-year-old Lawrence Atkins was sentenced Thursday in Cayuga County Court by Judge Thomas Leone. Atkins pleaded guilty in July to assaulting an Auburn police officer while trying to avoid arrest on September 19 of last year.

Prosecutors said Atkins ran from the scene, and during the chase, the officer suffered a serious leg injury after striking a metal door frame. Atkins pleaded guilty to assault as a violent felony and was sentenced as a second felony offender due to his prior criminal record.
