The union representing Auburn firefighters has made their endorsements ahead of November’s elections.
IAFF Local #1446 has endorsed Jimmy Giannettino in his bid for mayor following the announcement that Mike Quill would not seek reelection.
“Jimmy has proven himself invested in Auburn, the citizens, and the employees who provide services for both,” the union stated in a press release. “His decision making during COVID and the recovery afterward showed leadership, conviction, and a dedication to serve this community. We believe the citizens of Auburn deserve a Mayor who will look to the future and strive to make this City a desirable community for families and businesses.”
Giannettino faces off against Tim Latimore to become Auburn’s next mayor.
Even though there are only two council seats up for grabs, the union has endorsed three candidates – Christina Calarco, Rhoda Overstreet-Wilson, and Brian Dahl.
In making its decision, Local #1446 cited Calarco’s experience as a teacher and county legislator, stating the move from county to city government highlights her commitment to Auburn.
Overstreet-Wilson received the union’s backing because she is “deeply connected to the community and uniquely positioned to speak about the needs of all citizens.”
Dahl, the only Republican to receive an endorsement from the group was selected for his years working in Emergency Management, his background in municipal finance, and his knowledge of public safety.
For county races, Brian Scanlan has been endorsed for clerk, and Heidi Nightengale, Elane Daly, Stephanie DeVito, and Brian Muldrow for legislative districts 8-11, respectively, which cover the City of Auburn.
