One Auburn-based nonprofit has donated $3,000 to two community organizations.
APE Scare and Care Inc. has announced that, through its annual Fright Night Mansion and Trunk or Treat fundraisers, it was able to raise enough money to donate $1,500 each to Matthew House and Auburn Community Soup Kitchen to support the work they do in the community.
Matthew House’s goal is to provide those with a terminal illness a place to die with dignity and comfort, while Auburn Community Soup Kitchen, located at the Episcopal Church of Saints Peter & John, provides meals to those in need in the community.
Speaking with FLX Local Media, Melissa Panek with APE said the group started as a group of friends who would put on an annual haunted house and donate the proceeds to area nonprofits. Now, she said, they’ve grown into their own nonprofit, expanding its outreach in the Cayuga County area.
“We’ve grown to sponsor many events, not just focused on the holiday season. We try to use family fun events to raise awareness and raise funds and supplies for other not-for-profits in need in the county.”
New for this year, Panek said APE is partnering with the Auburn Walmart to host a food drive from 12:00-4:00p on December 13 and 14. The group hopes to fill a U-Haul with donations to give to Auburn Community Soup Kitchen to help it during the holiday season and winter months. She added that donations can be made in person or by ordering food through Walmart’s website and listing A.P.E. Scare and Care as the designated pickup person.
Finally, Panek said that, after spending multiple years at the Fingerlakes Mall, the group is searching for a new permanent location. She encourages those interested to follow their Facebook page for updates.
