Registration is now open for an upcoming children’s event letting kids take a bite out of local history and explore their creative side.
A collaboration between the Seward House and Seymour Library An Apple for Harriet Tubman will see illustrator Susan Keeter give a read-along of the book of the same name.
The book, written by Glennette Turner and illustrated by Keeter, tells the story of Tubman, beginning with her childhood as a slave in Maryland and ending with her settling in Auburn.
Following the read-along, there will be a special child-friendly talk on the relationships between Tubman, Margaret Stewart, her niece, and Frances and Fanny Seward.
Kate Grindstaff is the Seward House’s Education and Outreach Coordinator. She told Finger Lakes News Radio that the event will culminate with the children, guided by Keeter, creating a mural of the four women to be displayed near the library’s children’s space.
“It’s going to be something that all the kids collaborate on,” said Grindstaff. “So they’ll all get to add their own touch to this mural that’s going to be of those four women.”
An Apple for Harriet Tubman is designed for 8-11-year-olds and will run from 11:00a-12:30p on May 18 at the library. While the event is free, space is limited so parents and guardians are encouraged to register their kids for the program as soon as possible.
