Much of New York State, including the Finger Lakes region, will continue to experience smoky conditions from Canadian wildfires through at least Tuesday night, state officials announced.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Department of Health have extended the ongoing air quality health advisory until midnight Tuesday for all regions except Long Island. The advisory cites fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as the primary pollutant of concern, which can pose health risks—particularly to individuals with respiratory issues, the elderly, and young children.
The smoke is expected to create hazy skies and may cause visible smoke to linger across much of the state. Health officials warn of potential temporary spikes in pollution levels that could reach unhealthy thresholds, not just for sensitive groups but for the general public as well.
Residents are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activity, especially during periods when smoke is visibly thick or when air quality alerts are in effect. Those with asthma or other lung conditions should follow their medical management plans and stay indoors when possible.
The DEC and Department of Health continue to monitor air quality conditions closely and will issue further updates as needed.
