Survivors of sexual abuse have unanimously approved a $246 million settlement with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, advancing the diocese’s ongoing bankruptcy case toward resolution.
The settlement, which includes a $120 million contribution from Continental Insurance Company, announced last week, is intended to compensate more than 460 victims. The diocese filed for bankruptcy in 2019 in response to hundreds of abuse claims, many brought forward after New York’s Child Victims Act temporarily lifted the statute of limitations.
The bankruptcy plan now awaits final court approval, scheduled for September 5. If granted, it would clear the way for survivors to begin receiving compensation.
