“The formal opening of the Cayuga Museum of History and Art today is an event whose importance will be increasingly realized as the various departments get into full swing. When functioning properly, a museum is not a show place merely, but a work place and a recreational place. It offers not simply an opportunity to see and enjoy the finished productions of artists but also a chance to participate in the creation of beauty.” – Auburn Citizen; October 16, 1936
This Spring, the Cayuga Museum and Schweinfurth Art Center will finally begin construction on our joint capital project, the West End Arts Campus. This momentous occasion represents a key goal of Walter Long: the founding director of both organizations and an essential proponent of the arts in Auburn. As we take a step forward, we are looking back at the Cayuga Museum’s 88 years of collecting artwork, and taking this unique opportunity to display a majority of our painting collection in a single exhibition, Expanded Vision: Two Centuries of Paintings from the Cayuga Museum Collection. The exhibition will be on view in the Schweinfurth Art Center’s Davis Family Gallery, a visual testament to our organizations’ conjoined past, present, and future.
Join us for the opening of this very special exhibition on Saturday, February 10 beginning at 2 PM. Admission to the Schweinfurth Art Center and Cayuga Museum will be free, and a reception with refreshments will be available at the Schweinfurth. The exhibition will be on display February 10 – March 9, and March 23 – April 27 in accordance with the art center’s exhibition schedule.
