Cayuga County CCE Shop Meetings continues with “Conducting your own On-Farm Research with Mike Hunter, Field Crops, CCE North Country Regional Ag Team, Janice Degni, Field Crops, CCE South Central NY Region AG Team and Frank Clarke, Agriculture and Soils Educator, CCE Cayuga.
Conducting your own research can fulfill your curiosity if University or private industry trials and results can be replicated on your farm’s specific soils and growing conditions.
A trial is different from a demonstration in that you will be collecting data and using statistics to arrive at a definite conclusion.
Speakers will help you go through the steps necessary to set up a successful trial. Research should be conducted using the scientific method which is quite simple and has six basic steps:
- Make observations.
- Ask a question.
- Determine a premise (educated expectation of results).
- Develop and conduct an experiment using standardized research methods to take measurements to test the question.
- Make conclusions from the measurements (data). We can do the statistics for you!
- Report results.
