Bianca Quartaro, RN, has been a dedicated employee of UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health for over 40 years, working on 3 North at Geneva General Hospital. She was honored by the health system with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®.

“Bianca provided complete and attentive care to our dying family member. She extended her excellent care not only to her patient but also to the immediate family members. She went out of her way to ensure her patient was comfortable, warm, fed, and entertained. She found a radio station that our family member enjoyed and helped him with his TV. In his last days, she made sure he felt nurtured and safe. She also ensured his family was comfortable by providing furniture, blankets, and snacks. She explained everything we needed to know in a way we understood. It would be impossible to list all the wonderful attributes she displayed, but she is truly a remarkable example of what compassionate care looks like and should be given to all patients in their final days. If anyone exemplifies the qualities for which this award is given, it is her. We could not be more grateful for her compassionate care,” stated a grateful family member.

UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health is proud to recognize Bianca Quartaro with The DAISY Award. This is the second time she has received this award.

Established by The DAISY Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family, this award recognizes nurses who have a profound impact on the lives of their patients and their families. Patrick died at age 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The exceptional care Patrick received from the nurses at his bedside inspired the creation of this award.

If you have received extraordinary care from a nurse, or if you are a family member of someone who has experienced great care, and would like to nominate them, please visit: www.daisyfoundation.org/contact-us.

Nomination boxes are also located throughout Geneva General Hospital and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital. Nurses throughout Finger Lakes Health will be recognized throughout the year at celebrations attended by their colleagues, patients, and visitors.

Each Honoree receives a certificate commending them as an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
