Seneca County ‘s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC), a project of the United Way of Seneca County, has been hosting an annual Fill the Bus event for eight years. Through the support of numerous businesses, individuals and volunteers, WLC provided thousands of school supplies to the Romulus, Seneca Falls, South Seneca and Waterloo School Districts, as well as Seneca County private schools and home-schooled students, helping to ensure that all students had the basic tools needed to be successful in school.
With the changing times, however, comes a change in need. Increased funding allows schools to provide most supplies and the shift away from traditional pen-and-paper to electronic-based learning has drastically changed the landscape of classroom operations. As a result, WLC will be retiring the annual Fill the Bus event as it has historically operated and, instead, will focus on collecting school snacks for students. With the increase in food prices, families struggle to provide snacks for their children to take to school. Where teachers were once using their own money to purchase school supplies, they are now purchasing snacks to have on hand for their students. Food insecurity is at an all-time high in Seneca County and, often, the only consistent food available to a child is that which they receive in school.
Our new Fill the Bus: Snack Edition will take place this fall. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available. Check out www.uwseneca.org and https://fb.me/SenecaCountyWLC for updates.
