Cayuga County 4-H is excited to announce the 2024 edition of the Youth Fair and 2nd Annual Market Livestock Auction, August 1-3, 2024, at Union Springs Fire Department, 257 Cayuga Street (next to Union Spring HS)

The Youth Fair begins at 6:00pm on Thursday, August 1 with Youth Building Project Judging. The Livestock and Dairy shows begin with Showmanship on Friday, August 1 at 12:00 pm. This is just one of the many chances for visitors to the Youth Fair to talk with the 4H exhibitors about their projects. Mooney’s will be offering wood fired pizzas on Friday.

The Youth Fair continues Saturday, August 3rd with the Dairy Breed Show at 10:00am. Rabbit and Cavy enthusiasts can view their show at the Poultry tent at 10:00am. All who are interested in the Market Auction are invited to the buyer’s reception that will begin at 1:00pm. Registration to get a bidder number and a sale book showing the sale order can be done at that time. You can also meet with our local processors who are eager to answer questions such as figuring out cuts of meat and how to fill out a cut sheet. Real BBQ will be offering pre-ordered chicken and pork barbecue lunches with all the fixings for $15. Email [email protected] to preorder.

The 2nd Annual Livestock Market Auction begins at 3:00pm on Saturday, August 3rd. Thirty-five 4-H Exhibitors have been working since last fall to raise premium animals and are excited to put them up for sale. This year 8 hogs, 16 lambs and goats, 11 steers, 1pair of rabbits and 9+ pairs of chickens and ducks will be available to the highest bidder. (Poultry is processed and frozen. Other livestock sold live). An assortment of pies and other donated gifts will also be auctioned off. We enthusiastically invite all community members and local businesses to attend and take part in this exciting event. By purchasing an animal from the livestock auction, you are directly impacting youth development in Cayuga County.

4-H Youth produce responsibly-raised, locally sourced meat. Youth learn responsible animal care as well as valuable life skills including entrepreneurship, recording keeping, business management, and marketing. Supporting the 4-H auction is an excellent way for you and/or your business to be recognized as a supporter of youth agriculture in Cayuga County. The 4-H program will recognize all buyers in local print media and social media following the 4-H Livestock auction.

As a bidder, you can take part as an individual, arrange with friends or family and buy together, represent your business, or you can also consider donating to a local food bank. If you do not want to keep the animal, you can donate it back to the program to be resold. The original purchase price goes to the 4-H exhibitor showing that animal. For purchases that are to be resold, secondary sales contribute to materials and supplies for the Cayuga County 4-H Youth Fair. Do not miss this opportunity to be the last to bid, buy local and get fresh meat for your freezer!
