Newark Welcomes Cycle the Erie for 25th Year

750 cyclists from 40 states to visit Newark on 400-mile cross-state bicycle trip

2023 marks the 25th year of the Cycle the Erie Canal Tour

WHO: 750 cyclists from 40 states, ages 3 to 82; Mayor of the Village of Newark; Parks & Trails New York staff; other local leaders.

WHAT: Festivities celebrating Parks & Trails New York’s 25th annual Cycle the Erie Canal bike tour and Newark’s status as an Empire State Trail Town. Great photo ops as cyclists pass through and stop to visit Newark on their eight-day adventure across New York State.

WHEN: Tuesday, July 11 at 10:30 am – Parks & Trails New York staff, the Mayor of Newark, other local leaders and tour participants will be available for interviews. Cyclists will be passing through between 9am-12pm.

WHERE: Village Interpretive Center at T. Spencer Knight Canal Port, 199 Van Buren St, Newark, NY 14513

WHY: The Village of Newark was selected at the beginning of 2023 as an Empire State Trail Town by Parks & Trails New York and the New York State Canal Corporation. The village was selected for its high-quality trail-based services and amenities and demonstrated commitment to policies geared towards improving the trail user experience. As part of this designation, the village has been investing time and energy into opportunities to enhance the trail and welcome cyclists. The welcome festivities for cyclists will celebrate the work Newark has been doing to embrace the Erie Canalway Trail as an economic driver and valued community asset.
