The Newark Police Department would like to announce the promotion of Officer Greg DeBoerdere to the rank of Police Sergeant. Sgt. DeBoerdere is a 1995 graduate of Newark High School and has been with the Newark Police Department since December of 2008. DeBoerdere began his law enforcement career with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer in 2002 and transitioned to road patrol in 2006 before transferring the NPD. He has been a crime scene evidence technician since 2011 and has overseen Department’s property/evidence rooms since 2020. He is married and the father of four.

During his career Sgt. DeBoerdere has handled a wide variety of investigations and incidents. With the wealth of experience and knowledge that DeBoerdere brings to this key leadership position, it will help set up the NPD for continued success into the future.

Mayor Taylor commented, “We are thrilled to have someone with Sergeant DeBoerdere’s experience stepping into this leadership role. As our Police Department evolves and new members join our team, a seasoned officer like Sergeant DeBoerdere will be critical to the success and growth of our Department. We look forward to having Greg take on this important leadership position.”

Police Commissioner Stu Blodgett noted, “The promotion of Doug DeBoerdere, a seasoned officer of the Newark Police Department, to the position of Sergeant, further highlights the promotions and career paths available to the members of our esteemed unit. The Newark PD is a great place to start a policing career and if interested, pursue advancement opportunities.” He continued, “I wish Sergeant DeBoerdere nothing but success in his new role as he helps Chief Martin and others guide the Newark PD forward.”

Sgt. DeBoerdere’s promotion is effective Sept 17th and he will be sworn in at the Newark Village Board meeting on Sept 25th at 6:00pm.

Congratulations Sgt. DeBoerdere!
