The Finger Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce held its April Business After Hours Networking Mixer at the Geneva Public Library. This event was part of the Chamber’s 2025 Business After Hours Season Pass Program and was coordinated with the Geneva Public Library director, Frank Sykes. Guests were able to enjoy refreshments, meet the director and staff, see the building, and peruse the popular Annual Book Sale. Sykes spoke about the history and current programs of the Geneva Public Library before giving a guided tour showcasing all that the library has to offer.
The Geneva Public Library has been a cornerstone of the Geneva community for over a century. First established in 1905 as the Geneva Free Library through the efforts of the Daughters of the American Revolution and local advocate Charles N. Hemiup, the library opened its doors in 1906 with just 714 books inside a small YMCA room on Castle Street. Over the next few decades, the library relocated several times, eventually settling into the former Universalist Church building in 1910—its present-day home. In 1961, thanks to a generous gift from Dr. Warren Hunting Smith, the library expanded with a new west wing, followed by an additional expansion in 1995 to meet growing demand. In 2006, it was officially chartered as the Geneva Public Library to serve the entire Geneva City School District. Today, the library welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually, offers more than 800 public programs for kids and adults, and provides free meeting spaces for local organizations and community members—remaining true to its mission of learning, connection, and public service.
