In the afternoon of April 8, 2024, cities and towns in Ontario County will have the good fortune of being in the path of a full eclipse of the sun. The entire eclipse lasts from 2:07 – 4:34pm, with totality (darkness) starting at 3:32PM. Unlike partial eclipses which are more frequent, another total eclipse of the sun will not pass across this section of North America until 2144. BluePrint Geneva has partnered with Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Wyckoff Family Foundation, and professional and amateur astronomers to provide opportunities to experience the eclipse in and around Geneva.
While many local planning efforts are aimed at accommodating the large number of tourists expected for this event, BluePrint Geneva is focused on providing local residents with the materials and training they need to safely view the eclipse. This includes free solar eclipse viewing glasses, which are required safety equipment to prevent damage to the retina. BluePrint is also working with the local schools and the city to identify locations where groups can safely view the eclipse with trained eclipse leaders. Previous participants in total solar eclipses have described how moving the experience is and BluePrint hopes to create safe and informed viewing opportunities for all Geneva residents.
An eclipse training session will be held Saturday, February 3rd from 11a-1:30pm at the lakefront Welcome Center with astronomer and former director of the SUNY Oneonta Science Discovery Center, Doug Reilly. Lunch will be served. To sign up for this training or to be placed on the list for a free pair of eclipse glasses, please email [email protected].
In addition, Sunday 4/7, the day before the eclipse, BluePrint and the Geneva Family YMCA are partnering to put on a 5K fun run at the lakefront. Registration is now open on the BluePrint Geneva website or by visiting: http://tinyurl.com/eclipserun
