Gas Prices Jump Across New York as Spring Demand Builds

SHARE NOW

Gas prices are on the rise across New York State as the spring travel season gets underway, with drivers seeing noticeable increases at the pump over the past week.

According to AAA Western and Central New York, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is now $3.86—up 24 cents from last Monday. That’s also significantly higher than this time last year, when the average stood at $3.10.

Prices are climbing across much of the region. Batavia is averaging $3.70, Buffalo $3.76, Elmira $3.71, Ithaca $3.75, Rochester $3.78, and Syracuse $3.75. Rome is reporting an average of $3.86, while Watertown has the highest price in the region at $3.90 per gallon.

The upward trend comes as warmer weather increases travel demand. AAA says the seasonal shift typically leads to higher fuel consumption, which can push prices higher.

Despite a recent federal announcement to release millions of barrels of oil from the nation’s strategic reserves, there has been little immediate impact on prices. Crude oil costs continue to climb, contributing to higher prices at the pump.

Meanwhile, diesel prices are also rising in New York, now averaging $5.53 per gallon—up 39 cents in just one week.

Experts say drivers can expect continued volatility in the weeks ahead as market conditions and seasonal demand evolve.
