Firefighters from across the region gathered in Ontario County this weekend for specialized, hands-on training focused on one of the most dangerous scenarios they can face on the job.
The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) partnered with the White Springs Fire Department to host a regional flashover training at the White Springs Fire Association in Geneva.
The training brought together instructors from across New York State to teach firefighters how to recognize the warning signs of an impending flashover—a rapid and potentially deadly escalation of heat and flames inside a structure fire.
Participants took part in live-fire exercises designed to simulate real-world conditions, giving firefighters practical experience in identifying and responding to these critical situations.
Organizers noted that while firefighting gear is designed to withstand extreme heat, repeated exposure can lead to long-term wear and degradation. To help limit damage to department-issued equipment, NYSAFC provided loaner helmets and jackets for use during the training.
Officials described the weekend as a valuable opportunity for firefighters to sharpen their skills and improve safety in the field.
Fire departments from multiple agencies attended the training, traveling from across the region to take part.
