As National Poison Prevention Week gets underway, New York State officials are urging residents to take simple steps to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning in their homes.
The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is leading the effort, reminding families that everyday household items—such as cleaning products, medications, and personal care items—can pose serious dangers if not properly stored. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, poisoning remains the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in the United States.
State officials say young children are especially at risk, with common exposures involving cosmetics, cleaning supplies, and medications. Pets can also be vulnerable to toxic substances, including certain foods, plants, and household chemicals.
Secretary of State Walter Mosley encouraged families to take precautions such as keeping hazardous items locked away and out of sight, reading product labels carefully, and maintaining working carbon monoxide alarms.
Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized that millions of Americans are unintentionally poisoned each year, with children under six facing the highest risk.
Officials also advise residents to avoid mixing cleaning chemicals, ensure proper ventilation when using household products, and use protective gear when handling pesticides.
