Auburn Inmate Charged in Correction Officer Stabbing Investigation

SHARE NOW

New York State Police are investigating an alleged assault on a correction officer at Auburn Correctional Facility.

Troopers, working with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision’s Office of Special Investigations, say the incident happened on March 2 at approximately 4:38 p.m.

Authorities allege that an incarcerated individual, identified as 49-year-old Amar Bell of Marcy, attacked a correction officer while the officer was performing duties inside the facility. Investigators say Bell struck the officer multiple times and stabbed him three times with a homemade weapon.

The officer suffered multiple puncture wounds and other injuries and was taken to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, correctional staff took Bell into custody after he allegedly resisted and became combative during escort procedures. Officials say a homemade shank-style weapon was recovered at the scene and secured as evidence.

State Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office will be consulted regarding possible additional charges.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
