A Horseheads woman has been arrested in connection with the theft of funds from a local nonprofit organization, according to New York State Police.
58-year-old Karen Curtis was charged March 9 with third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony. Authorities say the investigation began February 13 after members of the nonprofit reported suspected fraudulent activity involving the organization’s treasurer.
An internal audit determined that more than $11,000 had been taken through unauthorized checks and credit card transactions dating back to 2023.
Curtis voluntarily appeared at the State Police barracks in Horseheads on March 9, where she was arrested and processed without incident. She was arraigned in Big Flats Town Court and released on her own recognizance.
Curtis is scheduled to return to court April 6 at 2:30 p.m. The investigation into the theft remains ongoing.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
