Assemblyman Phil Palmesano is encouraging eligible students in the 132nd Assembly District to apply for a scholarship program offered by the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators.  The 132nd District includes parts of Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, and Yates counties

The conference is currently accepting applications for its annual scholarship program, which will award four $3,000 scholarships. Two scholarships will recognize academic achievement, while two others will be awarded for athletic accomplishment.

The scholarships are open to current college students and high school seniors planning to attend college who live in the 132nd Assembly District. Students can complete the application online.

The application deadline is March 16.

Palmesano said the program offers a valuable opportunity for students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and community involvement.

“This is an excellent scholarship opportunity for high school seniors and college students in the 132nd Assembly District who have worked hard, distinguished themselves from their peers and intend to pursue higher education,” Palmesano said. “With college costs continually rising, this is a chance to lessen the financial burden that is a concern for so many young people and their families. I encourage eligible students in my district to apply.”

To qualify, applicants must have a grade point average of 85 or higher, demonstrate financial need, and show involvement in community service and extracurricular activities. Students applying for one of the athletic scholarships must also participate in an organized sport.

Applicants do not need to be of Italian-American heritage to be considered.

Scholarship recipients will be announced in April, and winners will be honored during a ceremony in Albany.

The New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is a bipartisan group of state Assembly and Senate members that promotes and celebrates the contributions of the Italian-American community in New York.
