Two members of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office were formally recognized last week for their service and dedication to public safety during the Steuben County Legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee meeting.
Deputy Erica McCoy was commended for her assistance to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office during the search for a person who fled the scene of a motor vehicle crash. According to officials, McCoy and K9 Tripp responded without hesitation, crossing county lines and arriving ready to deploy in just over 20 minutes.
The individual had fled into dense wooded terrain and had been exposed to severe cold temperatures for an extended period. After beginning the track, McCoy and K9 Tripp located the person deep in the woods in about 45 minutes.
In a letter supporting the commendation, Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione said McCoy’s quick response and tracking skills were likely instrumental in preventing what could have become a life-threatening situation. He added that her actions reflected the highest standards of law enforcement service, interagency cooperation, and commitment to preserving life.
Deputy Ethan Hurd was also recognized for his actions while assisting the Bath Police Department during a residential fire in the village last month.
Bath Police Chief Don Lewis told the committee that Hurd’s quick response, strong situational awareness, and teamwork with other agencies demonstrated the strength of interagency cooperation and reflected the highest standards of professionalism, bravery, and dedication to public service.
