On Thursday, Kellie Kelley, age 40, of Corning, was arrested by State Police following a traffic stop and the discovery of an assault rifle and methamphetamine in the town of Avoca.
Troopers from the Bath barracks were on patrol on County Route 105 at approximately 1:47 a.m. when they observed a 2015 Chevrolet Impala failing to maintain its lane. During the subsequent stop, Kelley allegedly provided a false name to officers. Investigators later confirmed her identity and discovered she was operating with a suspended license and had multiple outstanding warrants from the Corning Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, and State Police in Painted Post.
During an inventory of the vehicle, troopers allegedly located approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine, a .223 caliber semi-automatic assault-style rifle, and two large-capacity ammunition feeding devices. Authorities stated that Kelley later surrendered an additional quantity of methamphetamine that had been concealed on her person.
Kelley was charged with felony counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree (Intent to Sell), Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (Assault Weapon), two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (Ammunition Feeding Device), and Tampering with Physical Evidence. She also faces a misdemeanor charge of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and multiple traffic violations.
Kelley was transported to the Steuben County Jail for centralized arraignment.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
