All Animals Adopted At Beverly Animal Shelter As Closure Nears

The Beverly Animal Shelter says all of its remaining animals have been adopted as the longtime Seneca County rescue prepares to close after decades of service.

In a social media post this week, the shelter thanked supporters who helped find homes for the animals during its final days.

“Thanks to all who rallied behind us and our animals in order to get them all adopted into loving homes,” the organization wrote. The shelter said while the building may now be quiet, staff and volunteers are relieved knowing the animals are now in safe homes.

Beverly Animal Shelter announced late last year that it would shut down operations in late March or April of 2026. The decision followed the termination of its lease at the East River Street property after Dallyn Jenkins’ death in 2024, leaving the organization without long-term control of the facility.

New state regulations governing animal shelters contributed to the decision. Updated rules require expanded veterinary care standards, vaccinations and facility documentation, changes that would have required significant upgrades at the Waterloo site. Because the organization does not own its building, it was ineligible for certain state grant funding that could have helped pay for those improvements.

As the closure approached, the shelter stopped accepting most new animals and focused on finding homes for those still in its care.

The shelter also said it still has some supplies available, including igloos, dog houses, Kuranda beds, kennel decks and dog crates. According to the organization, some items are free while others are available for a donation as the facility clears out remaining equipment.

The final adoptions mean every animal that remained at the shelter has now been placed with a family.

While staff say they will miss the sounds of animals filling the shelter, they say the outcome offers some comfort as operations come to an end.
