The Village of Newark has announced the hiring of Agustin Gonzalez as its new Chief of Police. Gonzalez, who was born and raised in Buffalo, will be sworn in at the Village Board meeting on March 17.
After graduating from high school, Gonzalez joined the military and was deployed overseas during Operation Desert Storm. After returning home, he married, started a family, and worked both full- and part-time jobs while earning a degree in Criminal Justice.
Gonzalez brings more than 20 years of law enforcement experience, most of it with the Rochester Police Department. During his time there, he rose through the ranks and supervised patrol operations, coordinating shifts of up to 30 police personnel, including sergeants and detectives.
Village officials say his experience and commitment to community service made him a strong choice to lead the department.
Mayor Jonathan Taylor said the village is fortunate to have Gonzalez taking on the role.
“With his experience in law enforcement and his proven commitment to integrity, ethics, and public safety, he will serve the community well,” Taylor said.
Police Commissioner Stu Blodgett also praised the new chief.
“The first time I met Chief Gonzalez, I was very impressed. His police knowledge, demeanor and personality will serve him well as the next Chief of the Newark Police Department. Welcome aboard, Chief Agustin Gonzalez,” Blodgett said.
Village leaders say family, community involvement, and service to others are important values for Gonzalez as he prepares to lead the Newark Police Department.
