After Influx of Animals, Auburn SPCA Seeks Community Support

After seizing 427 animals last month, the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York is requesting community support.

On February 20, the SPCA’s Human Law Enforcement Officer joined multiple local government agencies in seizing the animals from a one-bedroom apartment in Cayuga County after an investigation found they were being kept in unsanitary conditions. The animals included: 211 pet mice, 168 pet rats, 32 hamsters, six rabbits, five dogs, and five snakes.

Since the seizure, the SPCA said its board and volunteers have been working nonstop to provide care and housing for the animals.

Because of the influx of animals to its care, the SPCA is asking for community support. The nonprofit is in need of towels, small blankets, and empty boxes, such as those used for pasta and cereal. Donations can be dropped off at the SPCA at 41 York Street in Auburn. Monetary donations can be made here.

“Together, we can turn this heartbreaking situation into 427 stories of hope,” the SPCA said in an email.
