Corning Woman Charged with Felony Welfare Fraud

On Tuesday, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Corning woman following a months-long investigation into alleged welfare fraud.

, 26, is accused of submitting false paperwork to the Steuben County Department of Social Services between August 2025 and February 2026. Investigators allege that through these actions, Gauby received $4,240 in benefits for which she was not eligible.

Gauby was charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree, Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, all of which are felony counts.

Following her arrest, Gauby was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and released. Sheriff Jim Allard credited the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit and the District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
