New and returning members of the Steuben County Legislature recently toured the Steuben County Landfill to get a closer look at how the facility operates and serves residents across Steuben County.

County officials and department heads joined the visit, which included an overview of the landfill’s daily operations, environmental safeguards, and long-term planning. Attendees were able to see how waste is managed safely and in compliance with state and federal regulations.

The tour was led by Billy Jefferds, assistant commissioner of the landfill with the Steuben County Department of Public Works. Jefferds outlined the engineering behind the facility’s newest cell expansion and explained how the site is maintained to protect public health and the environment.

Public Works Commissioner Eric Rose praised Jefferds and his staff for providing lawmakers with a detailed look at the operation, calling the landfill one of the county’s most important pieces of infrastructure.

County leaders said the tour helps ensure both new and experienced legislators understand the systems that support residents and businesses throughout the county.
