The Hobart baseball team split a doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall Diplomats baseball Saturday afternoon at Penn Medicine Park, dropping the opener 3-0 before bouncing back for a 12-0 win in Game 2.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 3, Hobart 0

In the first game, the Hobart Statesmen baseball collected seven hits but stranded seven runners, while the Diplomats finished with 13 hits, including three doubles.

Franklin & Marshall grabbed an early lead in the first inning when Nick Digiacomo singled, stole second, and later scored on a single up the middle by Michael von Zuben. The Diplomats added another run in the third as Digiacomo scored on Nick Lorenzo’s single to make it 2-0. In the fifth, Matt Hollender doubled and came home on Zac Fuscaldo’s single for a 3-0 advantage.

Senior Will Jones and junior Connor Schmiedlin each had two hits for Hobart, but the Statesmen couldn’t push a run across. Senior Teck Nash went 7 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Game 2: Hobart 12, Franklin & Marshall 0

In the nightcap, Hobart broke open a tight game with a 10-run outburst in the eighth inning to secure a 12-0 shutout.

First-year Jack O’Neil got things started with a leadoff triple in the fourth. After Sean Garvin walked and a fielder’s choice, O’Neil scored to put Hobart up 1-0. Garvin added a solo home run in the sixth — his second of the season — to extend the lead to 2-0.

The eighth inning showcased Hobart’s offense. Isaiah Pinto singled, stole two bases, and scored on a Garvin double. Schmiedlin followed with a double that plated two more runs, and Jack Gangemi added an RBI single. Nate Garrett reached on an error that brought home two runs, Pinto doubled in two more, and additional Franklin & Marshall miscues allowed the Statesmen to stretch the lead to 12-0.

Trevor Kimball tossed six innings of two-hit ball. First-year Joe Dunham, junior Chris Lockwood and senior Alex Marancik combined to close out the shutout, with Dunham striking out three.

Garvin led the offense with two hits, including a homer and a double, driving in two runs. O’Neil tripled and scored twice, while Pinto added two hits and three stolen bases.

For the record

Both teams recorded their first loss of the season during the twin bill. Hobart now sits at 5-1, while Franklin & Marshall is 3-1.

Game notes

Garvin extended his hitting streak to nine games and has now reached base safely in 14 straight. Christian Petry pushed his on-base streak to 17 games. Pinto’s three stolen bases are the most by a Statesman since Petry swiped three against Clarkson Golden Knights baseball on April 4, 2025.
