A grant will let one Cayuga County library offer new programming throughout the year.
The Weedsport Free Library has received a grant from Science Across America, allowing it to offer hands-on and virtual science-themed programming designed for all ages.
Alex Shenk is the library’s assistant director and youth services coordinator. She told Finger Lakes Daily News the grant consists of $500 the library can spend anyway it wants on programming and access to programming from the other 110 libraries across the country participating in Science Across America. For example, Shenk said an April program in partnership with the elementary school will see an aeronautical engineer from Colorado show kids how to make foam aeroplanes and teach them about aeronautics.
Since the elementary school lost its STEM program this year, Shenk said she’s confident the grant will help the library encourage exploration in science, technology, engineering, and math.
“We’re really about it. We’re trying to add a lot more STEM in our community because, unfortunately, the elementary school lost their STEM program this year. So we’ve been really trying to fill in that gap in our community.”
The library is asking the community to weigh in on Facebook about what local science discoveries or facts more people should know about. Answers will help the library decide on what programs it will offer.
