Police in Broome County shot and wounded a person Wednesday morning after responding to a reported mental health crisis in a residential neighborhood, according to the Town of Vestal Police Department.

Officers were called to 581 Sequoia Lane at about 11:36 a.m. for a report of an individual in distress. When they arrived, police said they encountered someone armed with a knife who was threatening self-harm.

Authorities said officers repeatedly ordered the person to drop the weapon and attempted to de-escalate the situation. During the encounter, the individual allegedly ignored commands and threw a television at officers.

Police said the situation escalated when the person threatened officers, raised the knife, and moved toward one of them. Officers then fired their weapons, striking the individual.

Officers immediately began providing medical aid until emergency crews arrived. The person was taken to United Health Services Wilson Medical Center for treatment. No officers were injured.

In accordance with department policy and in the interest of transparency, Vestal police requested an independent investigation by the New York State Police.

Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
