Auburn Prepares to Celebrate Harriet Tubman Day

Celebrations in History’s Hometown will commemorate Harriet Tubman Day next week.

The Equal Rights Heritage Center announced that a series of events will take place on March 10 at the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park and the ERHC in Auburn.

Activities at the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park will take place from 10:00a-4:00p and include a proclamation ceremony, speakers, and music. Other activities include ranger programs and family-friendly activities.

Timed programs at Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church
• 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Harriet Tubman Day Proclamation Ceremony
• 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Ranger Talk: “Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church: The Story of Community and Faith”
• 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ranger Talk: “The Deliverer: Excerpts from Night Flyer”

All day activities (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) At Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church
• Memorial tables honoring Karen Hill and Pauline Copes Johnson
• Special exhibit: “Reflections on a ‘Useful and Heroic Life"”
• Community “Wish Wall” for the 250th
• Make-and-take Inspiration Bracelets
• Harriet Tubman Day buttons and coloring sheets.

At the Parsonage
• Special exhibit: “Community Case: Celebrating Harriet Tubman”
• Junior Ranger activity books and NPS passport cancellation station (park visitation passport stamps)

The ERHC will hold a special keynote speaker event from 6:00-8:00p featuring Dr Tanisha M Jackosn of Syracuse University and the Community Folk Art Center.

Tied in with the nation’s 250th anniversary, the theme for this year’s Harriet Tubman Day is “Towards a More Perfect Union.” The ERHC said the theme, taken from the preamble to the US Constitution, “speaks to the nation’s courage, as demonstrated by the life and work of Harriet Tubman, who demanded that America’s promises be expanded to all.”
