Canandaigua Thrift Store Faces Uncertain Future

SHARE NOW

A downtown Canandaigua thrift store is asking for community support after a difficult winter led to heating problems, rising costs, and declining foot traffic.

Finger Lakes Treasure Trove, located at 222 S. Main St., says it has struggled financially in recent months following a furnace failure before Christmas, extreme winter weather, and increased utility and rent costs.

The store was forced to close for a week during the holiday season while repairs were made, cutting into what staff say is typically their busiest time of year.

“The winter really hit us hard,” the business wrote in a recent Facebook post to customers. “Between the furnace, the cold weather, and rising expenses, we’re struggling to cover basic bills and store expenses.”

Store officials say the cold weather also kept many shoppers at home, leading to slower sales in January and February.

Despite the challenges, the nonprofit thrift store continues to operate its community programs, including a free food pantry, winter clothing assistance, and discounted household goods.

According to the organization, demand for its food pantry has increased following recent changes to SNAP benefits. The pantry is supported through a partnership with Foodlink and provides food assistance to residents in need.

The store will host an event during the town’s Fire and Ice Festival on Feb. 21 and 22, featuring an “Everything $1” sale, raffles, and free cocoa. Proceeds will benefit the store and its community pantry.

Organizers say they hope increased community support will allow the store to remain open and reach its 10-year anniversary in July.

“We want to be here for our 10-year anniversary,” the group wrote. “But without increased support, we won’t be able to continue.”

Community members can support the organization by shopping locally, donating in-store, or contributing online through the store’s website.
