A 26-year-old Rochester man was arrested Friday after deputies say he stole merchandise from a department store and led officers on a foot chase through Eastview Mall.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to JCPenney at Eastview Mall around 1:30 p.m. Feb. 13 for a reported shoplifting incident.
Investigators said 26-year-old Daniel Belman of Rochester was seen concealing multiple items in a backpack valued at $319.50. Deputies say he passed all points of sale without paying.
When officers attempted to stop him, Belman ran, leading deputies on a foot pursuit through the mall property. He was eventually taken into custody near Target, authorities said.
Belman was charged with petit larceny and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.
He was taken to the Sheriff’s Office substation and later released on an appearance ticket. Belman is scheduled to appear in Victor Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
