New York Republicans have officially selected their candidate for governor.
At the party’s convention on Wednesday on Long Island, Bruce Blakeman accepted the nomination from the New York Republican Party, setting up a general election challenge for the state’s top office.
In his acceptance speech, Blakeman sharply criticized incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, arguing that New York families “simply cannot afford” her leadership. He pointed to what he described as $8 billion in tax increases, rising electric bills that he said are well above the national average, and accused the governor of prioritizing criminals over law-abiding residents.
Blakeman now moves forward as the Republican nominee heading into the November general election, where he will face Hochul as she seeks another term.
Party leaders say the campaign will focus on taxes, public safety, and the cost of living across the state.
