State DOH Launches Free HIV Self-Test Giveaway Campaign

The New York State Department of Health has launched a new round of free HIV self-test kit giveaways, aimed at making testing more accessible and helping reduce the spread of HIV.

Health officials say the self-tests allow people to check their HIV status quickly and privately at home, which can be especially helpful for those who may not seek traditional, in-person testing.

“Knowing your status and understanding how to prevent and control the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections are vital components of the collective mission to end the epidemic,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said.

The department has 1,960 test kits available for the latest giveaway, purchased with about $88,000 in state funding. New York residents outside of New York City can complete an online eligibility survey to have a free kit mailed to their homes. New York City residents can request a test through agencies participating in the city’s Community Home Test Giveaway program.

The announcement comes as the state marks National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on February 7. State data show ongoing disparities, with the rate of new HIV diagnoses among non-Hispanic Black individuals about nine times higher than the rate among non-Hispanic White individuals.

Health officials are also encouraging the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP, a medication that helps prevent HIV. While PrEP is considered safe and highly effective, the department says it is underused in many communities, including among Black, Indigenous and other people of color, young men who have sex with men, and transgender women.

Most insurance plans and Medicaid cover the cost of PrEP, including appointments, lab work and medication. The state also offers financial assistance through its PrEP Assistance Program.

The Department of Health says it will continue working with community partners across the state to expand access to testing, prevention and treatment as part of its ongoing effort to end the HIV epidemic.
