Legislation introduced in Congress could see a Cayuga County post office renamed.
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, whose 24th Congressional District includes the northern half of Cayuga County, announced that she has introduced legislation to rename the post office in Martville in honor of Sgt Starrett John Ingleston, who lost his life during the Vietnam War.
In her press release, Tenney said that Ingleston, a Mexico, New York native, joined the army on February 3, 1969, deploying to Vietnam in July. He received multiple distinctions during this time, including sharpshooter and expert grenade thrower medals, a Unit Citation, and two Air Medals for participating in more than 50 helicopter missions, Tenney said. In October 1969, he received the Purple Heart for being injured in combat.
On March 29, 1970, Tenney said Ingleston was killed protecting his fellow soldiers while defending the perimeter of his camp after it came under rocket fire. For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the Bronze and Silver Stars.
“Sergeant Starrett John Ingleston represents the very best of our nation and the Mexico community he called home,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “His extraordinary bravery, steadfast devotion to his fellow soldiers, and ultimate sacrifice for our freedom must never be forgotten. This designation would create a lasting tribute so all who pass through these doors remember his service.”
