Yates County posted one of the strongest gains in local sales tax revenue in New York State last year, ranking near the top statewide as overall collections continued to climb.
According to a report released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli (see below), local government sales tax collections across the state totaled $24.4 billion in 2025, a 4.5% increase — or $1 billion more — than the year before. The growth rate exceeded the 3.8% average annual increase recorded during the post–Great Recession recovery years.
Yates County stood out with an 11% year-over-year increase in sales tax revenue, the second-highest growth rate in the state. Only Chenango County saw a larger jump at 11.8%. Hamilton County (10.9%) and Delaware County (10.7%) followed close behind.
Statewide, 52 of the 57 counties outside New York City — more than 90% — reported higher collections, with nearly half posting gains of 5% or more. Overall county collections rose 4%.
Sales tax revenue is a major funding source for local governments, supporting services such as public safety, infrastructure and community programs. The double-digit increase in Yates County signals particularly strong consumer spending and economic activity locally compared to much of the state.
