UPDATE: Steuben County Nitrogen Leak Incident Resolved

SHARE NOW

12 p.m. UPDATE:

The nitrogen leak at the Corning Incorporated Diesel Plant has been resolved, officials say. Emergency responders have cleared the scene, traffic has been restored, and residents who were evacuated can return home.

Plant officials report that the cause of the leak has been isolated and mitigated, and there is no further threat to the public.

Emergency crews responded to a hazardous materials incident Wednesday morning at the Corning Diesel Plant on State Route 417 in the Town of Erwin.

Steuben County 911 received a call just after 7:15 a.m. reporting a nitrogen leak at the facility. Forest View Gang Mills Fire Department was dispatched and found a vapor cloud drifting from the plant toward Interstate 99 and State Route 417, reducing visibility in the area.

As a precaution, authorities evacuated the immediate area and established traffic detours. An evacuation center has been set up at the Addison Community Center for nearby residents.

Emergency responders are working alongside plant officials to monitor the situation. Officials say the incident is stable at this time, but are urging the public to avoid the area. Drivers traveling on I-99 or State Route 417 are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Updates will be released as more information becomes available.
