A multi-family apartment house was destroyed by fire in the village of Watkins Glen early Monday morning.
Firefighters from Watkins Glen, Montour Falls, Burdett, Beaver Dams, Hector, Dundee, and Himrod were called out at around 6 o’clock. Everyone inside the 10th Street home was able to escape safely, but the building is a total loss.
The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office said that because firefighters used large amounts of water to fight the blaze, ice formed on 10th Street, making it unsafe for residents and vehicles. Authorities urged residents to avoid 10th Street entirely and for residents to exercise extreme caution if living on the street.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
