A fast-moving chimney fire destroyed a home along Smith Road in Lodi early Saturday, as firefighters battled extreme cold and difficult conditions for several hours.
Fire departments were dispatched at about 3:40 a.m. to assist with a reported chimney fire. Upon arrival, Chief Snyder upgraded the call to a working structure fire, according to the Ovid Fire Department.
Crews from multiple agencies worked the scene for more than five hours in an effort to save the home. The building’s construction, combined with harsh winter conditions, ultimately prevented firefighters from stopping the fire.
While the home could not be saved, officials said crews were able to remove many of the homeowners’ personal belongings before conditions worsened. No injuries were reported.
The home belonged to Tim Angell and Karen McCabe, longtime residents along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. Friends said the couple spent more than 25 years building the house themselves, shaping it through hands-on craftsmanship and creative work.
The fire resulted in a total loss of the home and its contents. Friends said the couple was able to escape safely with their animals just hours before a winter storm moved into the area.
A fundraiser has been organized by family friends to help cover immediate needs, site preparation, and rebuilding costs. Organizers said all donations will go directly toward assisting the family as they recover and rebuild.
