Cayuga Community College’s men’s basketball team erased an early 15-point deficit to earn a road victory over Genesee Community College on Thursday.
After trailing for the first 30 minutes, the Spartans outscored the Cougars by 12 in the final 10 minutes to secure a 75–69 win. Freshman guard Josiah Murphy led all scorers with 30 points and added eight rebounds and three assists.
Genesee built an early advantage, extending its lead to 33–18 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Cayuga closed the half on a 16–9 run to cut the deficit to eight at the break.
The Spartans continued to chip away early in the second half, as baskets and free throws from Murphy and Kirk McFarlane trimmed the lead to three. Genesee remained in front until Murphy converted a layup with just over five minutes remaining to give Cayuga its first lead of the game. A jumper by Jadeir Breedlove with less than two minutes left put the Spartans ahead for good, and free throws from Murphy, Breedlove, and Yagub Drammeh sealed the victory.
Breedlove finished with 16 points, three assists, and three steals. McFarlane grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while Drammeh added nine boards. Cayuga’s defense limited Genesee to 17 percent shooting from three-point range.
Cayuga improves to 3–2 in Mid-State Athletic Conference play and 3–11 overall. The Spartans return home Saturday, January 24, to host Onondaga Community College. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
