The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is promoting its Money Savings Guide, a free resource offering more than 75 tips designed to help New Yorkers reduce everyday expenses and stretch their household budgets.
State officials say the guide comes at a time when many consumers are feeling the effects of rising prices. According to a recent Wells Fargo money study, 90 percent of respondents reported experiencing sticker shock over the cost of common purchases, while 76 percent said they are actively looking for ways to cut back on spending. The study also found that 86 percent want to be more intentional about managing their money.
Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley said affordability remains a top priority and that the guide is meant to provide practical tools consumers can use to save money. The tips address everyday spending categories such as groceries, utilities, transportation, health care, subscriptions, shopping, and entertainment.
The guide encourages consumers to review and cancel unused subscriptions, plan meals to reduce food waste, shop sales and use coupons, and compare prices before making purchases. It also offers advice on lowering heating and cooling costs through thermostat adjustments, home weatherization, and regular maintenance of heating and cooling systems.
Additional recommendations focus on reducing energy use by shutting down electronics when they are not in use, unplugging devices that draw power even when turned off, and choosing more energy-efficient options for streaming and entertainment.
State officials say even small changes can add up over time, helping consumers stay within their budgets while still covering essential expenses and activities.
