One of the men running to be Cayuga County’s next sheriff will lead the Saint Patrick’s Day parade in Auburn.
The Auburn Ancient Order of Hibernians has announced that Chris Major has been selected as the Grand Marshal for its parade on March 14.
The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, which the Hibernians tout as the shortest in New York State, runs from the corner of Van Anden and State Streets to the Hibernians at 79 Van Anden Street.
Major, a retired Auburn Police Officer, is one of two men seeking the Republican and Conservative Party’s nominations to succeed current Sheriff Brian Schenck, who announced in November that he would not seek a third term. The other is Rob Franklin, a lieutenant detective with the sheriff’s office.
Both men are seeing several endorsements in their respective bids. Major has received endorsements from former police chief James Slayton and Justin Herrling, president of the Auburn Teachers Association. Franklin has been endorsed by Sheriff Schenck, Undersheriff Stuart Peenstra, former sheriff Dave Gould, the Sheriff’s Employees Association of Cayuga County, and the Cayuga County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Association.
