New York State Police have arrested an inmate in connection with a violent assault that left another inmate critically injured at Elmira Correctional Facility.
According to State Police, 50-year-old Oscar Fernandez was charged following a lengthy investigation into an incident that occurred in September 2024. Authorities said they were first notified of a serious assault involving an incarcerated victim who suffered severe head injuries and required emergency medical treatment. The victim was transported to multiple medical facilities and remains in critical condition.
The investigation was conducted by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in coordination with the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and the Chemung County District Attorney’s Office. As a result of that investigation, Fernandez was identified as a suspect.
On January 5, State Police obtained a Superior Court warrant charging Fernandez with attempted murder in the second degree, a Class A-II felony; assault in the first degree, a Class B felony; and assault in the second degree, a Class D felony.
Fernandez, who is currently an inmate at Elmira Correctional Facility, was taken into custody on the warrant and is expected to be produced for arraignment in Chemung County Court.
State Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
