Two people were able to safely escape after a structure fire heavily damaged a home on Maxwell Road late Monday morning.

First responders were called to 841 Maxwell Road in the Town of Middlesex at 10:23 a.m. for a reported house fire. Investigators say the fire started as a chimney fire from a wood stove.

Fire crews remained on scene for several hours as they worked to control and extinguish the blaze. The two-story, single-family home sustained heavy damage.

The residents, identified as 21-year-old Chester Hoover and 21-year-old Marlene Hoover, were inside the home at the time of the fire. Both were able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported.

Multiple fire departments responded to the scene, including Middlesex, Rushville, Potter, Benton, Branchport, Penn Yan, Crystal Beach, and Naples, with additional departments on standby. Middlesex Ambulance and the Offices of Emergency Services from both Yates and Ontario counties also assisted.
