DMV Offices Across Finger Lakes to Close Mid‑February for Technology Upgrade

SHARE NOW

DMV offices across the Finger Lakes region will be closed for several days in February as the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles rolls out a major technology upgrade, officials say.

The shutdown will begin Friday, Feb. 13, with services ending at 2 p.m., and will continue through the Presidents Day holiday and Tuesday, Feb. 17. Offices are planned to reopen Wednesday, Feb. 18, pending state approval.

During the closure period, no DMV services will be available — in person, by phone or online — as the agency migrates about 30 million records to a modernized system as part of a long‑term project to replace aging technology platforms.

In Cayuga County, the Auburn area DMV will close early at 1 p.m. on Feb. 13 and remain closed through Feb. 17, reopening at 9 a.m. on Feb. 18. Seneca County’s Waterloo office and Yates County’s Penn Yan DMV are also part of the shutdown, with local clerks urging residents to plan ahead.

Steuben and other Finger Lakes counties are participating in the statewide closure as part of the first phase of the statewide tech upgrade. DMV officials say the new system was built in partnership with FAST Enterprises LLC and will make services more secure, stable and efficient for customers once complete.

County clerks in impacted areas are advising residents to complete any necessary DMV transactions well before the shutdown and to monitor official county websites and social media pages for updated reopening details.
