Retired Schuyler County District Attorney Joseph G. Fazzary has been named the “2025 Outstanding Prosecutor” by the New York State Bar Association.

Fazzary received the award during a ceremony held at the Midtown Hilton in Manhattan before the Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section. His wife, Susan, daughter, Isabella, and current Schuyler County District Attorney Jeremy Hourihan attended the event.

In his acceptance remarks, Fazzary said the recognition extended beyond himself and his family to the community he served throughout his career. He thanked his family for their support and credited his staff as a key factor in both his personal success and the success of the district attorney’s office.

Fazzary also spoke about the unique challenges of operating a small district attorney’s office, noting that prosecutors in smaller counties often handle responsibilities not typically seen in larger jurisdictions, including answering phones, appearing in justice courts, and managing their own caseloads.

Fazzary was nominated for the honor by Jack Ryan, former chief assistant district attorney of Queens County; Timothy Koeller, retired chief assistant district attorney of Richmond County; and Robert Masters, former counsel to the Queens County District Attorney. Ryan presented the award.

Fazzary served as Schuyler County district attorney for 28 years. He said the recognition was especially meaningful coming from colleagues across New York State.

“To have lawyers from across New York State recognize the work I’ve put in over the last 28 years to help make the Southern Tier a safer place is the honor of a lifetime,” Fazzary said.
