The Canandaigua Police Department is responding to a body-worn camera video circulating on social media that shows an interaction between a police officer and a local resident. The video has received widespread attention.
According to the department, the video captures a brief encounter with an adult who had urinated in his pants while walking with a child. The officer approached out of concern for the child’s welfare and to ensure the child was under appropriate supervision. The officer requested to speak with the adult away from the child to provide privacy and maintain dignity during the conversation.
During the interaction, the officer determined that the individual was not intoxicated or impaired and that the circumstances were related to a developmental condition. The child was confirmed to be safe and appropriately cared for, and the interaction was concluded.
An administrative review of the incident found that the officer’s actions were warranted and in compliance with department policy, given the focus on ensuring the welfare of the child.
At the same time, the department emphasized the importance of sensitivity and care when interacting with individuals with disabilities or other vulnerabilities. Canandaigua Police said they recognize the impact such encounters can have on individuals and families, even when intentions are focused on safety.
The department noted that it is an accredited agency and that all officers receive training in mental health, crisis intervention, de-escalation tactics, and disability awareness. To further reinforce these practices, this year’s annual in-service training will begin with department-wide instruction focused on recognition, sensitivity, and tactics when interacting with vulnerable members of the community.
“Canandaigua Police Department remains committed to serving all members of our community with professionalism, respect, and compassion,” said Chief of Police Matthew Nielsen.
