An 81-year-old Honeoye man was cited after deputies say he had a firearm on Finger Lakes Community College property, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to authorities, the incident began Jan. 10 around 5:17 p.m. when deputies assisted campus police with a motor vehicle crash on campus in the Town of Hopewell. During the investigation, officers discovered a .22-caliber revolver inside the vehicle.
While the firearm was lawfully owned and listed on the operator’s pistol permit, possession of a firearm on college property is prohibited under New York State law. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office then took jurisdiction over the felony-level offense.
John Robert Burkett was taken into custody at his Richmond residence on Jan. 11 around 1:21 p.m. He was issued an appearance ticket and released, and is scheduled to appear in Hopewell Town Court at a later date to answer the charge.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
